I have a 1974 50 hp looper.....I heard you can turn it into a 55 hp by simply changing the carb jets.......seems too good to be true.......... Is it??????

If it matches up with the intake manifold you can. Otherwise need another manifold.

I am not familiar with that particular engine..
If you change the jets on any engine to get more power, you can only lean it out which is not good, so you need more air so you can burn more fuel to get more power, maybe this can be done with a larger carb.
ex; if the 55 carb is slightly larger ID to accomodate more air

Not quite that simple... The early 50hp models like yours were 41.5 cubic inches, while the 55s were 44.99 cubes... All changing the jets will do is make your motor run poorly...
