Turning better trim in or out?

Hello all my fellow I-boaters.

I was trying to help a friend new to boats dock his new 21' deck boat with a 150 Yamaha outboard.

This thing is impossible to dock! It is very flat in the back and slides when you turn at idle speed.

A friend was with us who has more experience than me and he trimmed the engine out about half way and said that it would make the boat turn better at a very slow speed. I told him that being trimmed in all the way was better.

What do you all think?

Steering in the water requires either a fin, or directional thrust. That is one thing nice about a dual installation, you can put one if F and the other in R and basically turn on a dime.

So if trimming out gives you better directional thrust, then, baby, go for it!!!!!!!

I think he has a single engine.
Depends on the dead rise on the bow of his deck boat. If the bow has a sharp V trimming down will help otherwise trim up. Best bet is to simply test several trim levels and pick what is best. Good luck.

in my experiences at either high or low speeds turning is much easier and accurate with the drive trimmed down rather than high. with it low you have more contact and bite in the water, but some of the docks i use dont permit me to dock with the trim low and must make do the best i can. sometimes if im coming in a little far from the dock, turning the drive toward the dock and giving it a quick hard reverse sucks the rear of the boat in so the person on rear can grab the dock and tie off. id rather take it slow and have to try again than come in hot and damage the boat or dock etc.
