Turning issues in reverse..

I have been haveing a problem when in reverse of the stern not turning to the left in reverse.. I have a '70 Starcraft v180(18') with 140 merc and mc-1 outdrive.. I had a torque steer issuse last year. So i was told to adjust the andode tang thingy. to the left. It is adjusted to left as far as it can go.. after doing that is when this turning issue came about. I do not have a dolphin fin.. will not have one either.. It will turn the stern to the right with no problem.. thats what has me stumped..

any suggestions is greatly apperitiated(sorry for misspelling) Im just tired of it not wanting to turn left in reverse when unloading/loading the boat

Does the drive actually turn the same amount both directions?

Yes Don S.. it does turn the same in both directions. It goes full left and full right.. Its like something is pushing against it when I turn the wheel to the left when backing up. but the outdrive is turned to full left. going forward it has no prblems turning either direction. the problem is only in reverse..

Do you have the Stern drive down when backing? My boat doesn't react well unless it is pretty far down in reverse. And it does seem to turn to the right better in reverse. I just thought it had something to do with the direction the prop is turning makes it better in one direction.

it does seem to matter if if i have it trimmed up or down.. but trimming up does let it turn aliitle better.. only started this after adjusting the trim tab andode to full left stop stop torque steer.. i would rather fight torque steer the not be able to turn in reverse

I have never seen or heard of the trim tab effecting reversing. It usually only effects it when you are moving through the water. Sorry I couldn't help. Maybe bouncing it back to the top someone else with an idea will help.. Good luck..

If it didn't happen until after you adjusted it try putting it back where it was and see if the problem goes away. If you have that much torque steer sounds like you have other issues.

I agree, this happens to me when I use my 4 blade, and doesn't when I use my 3...

I dont run a 4blade prop. have not changed props since i got the boat.. I put the trim tab anode back to where its was and it didnt change much.. Got looking at yesterday, there looked to be between a 1/4" to 1/2" difference between full left and full right, with full right being closer to to the gimball housing. I have loosened the steering nuts inside and adjusted the steering tube so the steering arm is as far left as i could get it.. the went full left and full right again. It looks about the same now. no noticeable difference between the to sides now.. will see how that works next time i have it out.. hopefully tomorrow I will have it out with wife, she wants to go fishing in it.. thanks for everyones suggestions.. anymore suggestions and thoughts are still apperitiated and always appreitiated.. Oh and the props that came with the boat when i bought it 2 are 14.23 and 1 is a 15.25x23.. the 15.25x23 needs to be rehubed for it spun on the hub.. i junked the worse of the 2 14.5x23 cause it had big chunks missing..

ok. after readjusting the steering tube on the transom yesterday, we took the boat out fishing today. when i unloaded it and backed up to the left it turned left but only if i was standing in the middle of the boat. once the wife and son were in the boat i had no problem in either direction. so apparently it was out of wack.. got it right now though.. thanks guys..
