Anyone know exactly why Merc says DO NOT turn intake reed petals over that are raised up off of reed box? As long as they are not cracked and lay flat it seems ok.My guess is it might increase the opening tension and decrease fuel flow.

I can't give you exact reasons but MERC is not the only manufacturer. I know OMC also do not recommend this. Might have to do with metal fatigue? With the "petals only opening 1 way for so long and then suddenly being forced the other way could probably lead to early failure. I know I would hate to have one of them floating around my cylinder at w.o.t.

Yes...Fliping them over is a bad idea...

After flexing in one direction for a long period...being bent in the opposite direction by the low crankcase pressure would cause it to break... Much like bending the tab back and forth on a beer can weakens it quickly.

don't do it, metal fatgiue is one reason , but the primary reeason is that when the are standing open they are bent. by turning them over the bend puts preload on the reeds and forces them closed tighter than intended and will cause idle problems, such as lean spit and stalling , but the fatigue problem can ruin an otherwise good engien when it breaks and scores cyl. wall or wrecks a crank journal. in one word again, don't.

Besides the fatigue, I think the opening tension for reeds is pretty carefully tuned, both by the reed itself & the clamp. If it's much easier or harder, than stock, to get that first little bit of opening of the reed, the idle may change. Something to consider...
