I?m having trouble starting my 92? MerCrusier 3.0L. Turns over but will not catch? Started every time ?on second try? for the first half of the summer. Then one day, ready to go out, couldn?t get it started. Marina did a tune up, replaced distributer cap and plugs. Next day, started no problem. Two days later after heavy rain same problem, but finally started after 5 or 6 tries. We?ve had a lot of rain (she?s kept well covered) but I see a lot of moisture in the engine compartment?

Thanks,
Doug

Re: Turns over but will not catch

I had this problem and solved it!
I went through 5 coils before figuring out what was happening.
At first, I thought water was getting in around the seal on the engine box. I got my dealer to give me a free seal (way after warranty expired:)... that didn't help at all.

Then I put paper towels over the engine, closed the engine box and hosed it down to see where the water was coming in.
Turns out that the bolt that holds the strap used to open the engine box was not sealed properly and let water get through and drip right on the coil and distributor cap. Only bad enough to short out the coil in really bad rain.. a few times a year.

I used a little silicone sealant, and the engine has been bone dry since, even in the horrible storms we had the last few weeks!
I took the cushion off of the engine box and sealed all of the holes. I hosed it down and no water got in.
And no starting problems since!

So do a little detective work and figure out why there is moisture. There shouldn't be any!
