Hi I have just purchased a Searay SVR 240 Weekender of about 1974 Vintage it has Twin 165 IL6. This is my first boat bigger than 17'. It needs some work to make it all tip top for the most part relativly minor things. I am hoping to take my time over the winter and get the parts togeather and do some of the work so I am ready to go in the spring. I am going to have many questions before she hits the water in the spring. Overall she is in great shape and both engines run well.

So for my first question's and my first post I will start with:

The props on it are 2 different sizes! I am not sure exactly what they are as I haven't taken them off as of yet. There are no numbers on the outside of the prop's that I can see. One of the props will have to be replaced/repaired as it is in rough shape. Both props are RH.

Is it not normal that one engine should be counter rotating?

Is it normal for one prop to be a different size when you have twins both rotating the same way?

Should I just replace both props with 2 I know are the same make/type and keep the better one as a spare?

Anyone have any idea what kind of performance I can expect out of this boat? And how terrable will it be on fuel?

I have not had it in the water and the guy I bought it from didn't either (long story short he bought it from a friends uncle who has moved away, his wife saw size of boat and said no way).

I think the outdrives are Alpha 1? There is no serial numbers on them that I can find. Any plates/stickers that were on them are long gone. And due to some corrosion I think the serial numbers are gone.
The boat is supposed to weigh 4400 lbs
The WOT for the 165's is 4300

Thanks for any words of wisdom you can share.

Re: Twin 165's Searay 240

I would say it would be normal for it to have a counter rotating setup.
I believe the 165 is a good strong engine. You don't see much on them here
probably been years since they were normal equipment.
I think they are going to make a lot of stern weight ;may be sluggish holeshot.Obviously twice the maintainance.
You will definately go through some fuel at WOT about (32 GPH (gallons per hour)May struggle to stay on plane at reduced throttle, all that weight again.
Certainly not normal to have different props unless there are different ratios.
And not normal to have different ratios. The twins will let you manuver in tight quarters.

32 GHP! ...oh my... I think I may have just had a minor heart attack... I figured it wouldn't be great on gas...but I had no idea it would be quite that bad...

Keep in mind that is a rule of thumb wot figure 10% of horsepower.
and if you can find the ideal cruising speed it could be signifigantly less.
