Re: twin 1998 175 evinrudes cold
As "comfy" as those gauges make many people feel, I don't put much stock in them. Those engines should idle at 140 (+/-15) and not exceed 160 at WOT. On most all the engines I check temp on, they run 145-ish at idle and 125 or less at WOT - this is in about 70 degree water, if the water is warmer or cooler than this, the engine will run a few degrees warmer or cooler too. The engine temp is normally checked at the top of the thermostat pocket. I use an infrared temp gun when I'm servicing these things.

When the water pressure builds as you increase rpm, the thermostats lift off their seats and floe a very hi volume of water, that's why they run cooler at higher rpm. What you are seeing sounds quite normal to me. I would verify the operating temperature as outlined in the service manual - DO NOT run the engine on a garden hose when performing temp checks.

If all is well, then that's the way your gauges read.

-John
