Two Battery Setup???

I am getting rid of about 5 feet of useless wire that has been cut, spliced, crimped and corroded! I have a starting battery on one side (port) of the boat closest to the starter. The deep cycle battery is on the other side (starboard). I would like to swap locations of batteries due to the massive size of the deep cylce being in the way of the trim pump.

Can I run approx. 4 feet of wire from starter to starting battery without it being to long of a run?

Yes you can, as long as you use the proper wire size, buying a starter wire from a auto parts is a good choice.

I am not sure the gauge of the wire. I believe its either 4 or 8 gauge.

It definitely is not 8 or 6 gauge. Extending battery cables means it must be the same size or larger than the existing cable.

I would not extend the cables to the batteries. i would just cut what was there to shorten the run. sorry for any confusion...

Re: Two Battery Setup???

Ok, so I started ripping stuff apart and found some corrosion on a wire which had a in line fuse installed. i cut the wire back far enough to where there was no corrosion.

My question is the wire is 10 gauge. The only in line fuses I have found are 12,14,16 gauge wires. Can I use a 12 gauge in line fuse for 10 gauge wire?

You can find 10G fuse holders.

you may just want to get a fuse box, (i.e. Blue Sea Fuse Box) cleaner way to handle fuses, less connections to corrode.

If you go with a 12,14 or 16 gauge fuse holder, the wire may overheat before the fuse blows. 10 gauge is rated for 30A. If you use the 10G wire for something less, and fuse it appropriately, then you can use the lower gauge.

Remember a fuse is designed to prevent the wire from overheating, not protect equipment.
