Hey Everyone, New here and cant seem to figure this out i have a 1975 135 evanrude... or maby its a 1978 140 Evanrude. i recently pulled to head cap off due to no compression and my piston has chipped off. luckly it dont seem too badly hurt but my problem is i dont know which parts to be looking for. ill post some photos in just a few that i got but, The tag on the Carb intake cover says a 1975. but the model number located on the transoim mount says its a 1978 140. any other way that i can tell for sure.

The 1975 has a big bracket at the back / top of the motor with one powerpack and 4 coils mounted on it.-------The 78 model has 2 powerpacks and 2coils mounted on each cylinder head.

????----It appears to me that it is ---" one big bracket with one powerpack and 4 coils on it"----That would be the 1975 model ignition system as explained in post # 2 above.

Sorry misunderstood there. so that being said any way to find a model for this then the 1978 was pulled from the transom bracket via the model number. the 1975 135 was on the carb sticker with no model number given.

OLD EXHAUST RIB.jpg The ignition system is certainly from the 135. One way to tell if the block is a 140 is to pull the two exhaust manifolds off and see if there is a rib machined cutout at the bottom of the exhaust chest. This first pic is of a 135 block with the later 140 cutout machined into it. NEW EXHAUST RIB.jpgThe 135's don't have the machined cutout-part of the reason for the extra 5 hp, in addition to the rubber intake filler blocks.

I'll have to wait till next weekend before I pull anything else apart. Don't guess I need the model number piston is OEM 5006658 for the 135. Just trying to get this running on a tight budget. Confident I can do it just new to outboard work. I'll double check the block for that cutout before I order anything. Thanks again for your help.

Repair parts between the 2 models would be the same.-------------No spend any money till the parts are lined up and examined on the work bench.
