Guys, I got a two questions, one I have a 1975 85HP Johnson, I'm just getting it together on my boat setting things up, I like to know if its OK to run my 85HP on muffs and could you tell me where I should be looking for that little stream of water that?s suppose to come out? Second question, my son has a 1985 or 87 15HP Evinrude, had the boat out a couple times and it runs great but I never notices that little stream of water coming out of his motor, where should this be coming out of?
Thanks
Joe

Re: Two easy questions

It is fine to run it on muffs, just don't rev it over 1500rpms. A 1975 model does not have a tell tale, but you should see some water comming out of the two hole about mid way down on the midsection. I believe that the 15hp motor should have a stream of water comming out of the back bottom of the cowling, but I am not familiar enough with this model to be sure.

Re: Two easy questions

Thanks crb478, I had a old 9 1/2 Johnson and that had a tell tale, At least I know what to call it now, I told my son I think water should be coming out somewhere, the thing runs great and doesn't get hot at all.
Thanks Again

Re: Two easy questions

Right, the 85 does not have a tell-tale. I would recommend adding one if you're at all mechanically inclined. Using the info on this site, I was able to add one on my '73 a couple of weeks ago. It's a 10-15 minute job if you choose not to remove the head first. Good to able to constantly monitor the water pump.
