I have a 1984 Evinrude 90 VRO, It's going in for a pre-season check up next week. My question is How long is the oil good for? I bought the boat late in the season last year and the tank was full of oil, now it's down to about 1/4 tank.. I never added any to it, it's the oil that came with the boat. Is it ok to just top it off with new oil or should I dump it and use all new oil?
And my second question is, can The marina check to see if the warning alarms are working on that motor? Is there any way I can do that? It would be nice to know if they are working, since I've never heard them:confused:

The oil has a many year shelf life. You are OK on that. Top it off before you use it.

If you purchase a service manual for your exact motor, you can check the alarms yourself.

One thing you should do is to suck some oil off the botom of the oil tank and see if it has water mixed in. If so, pour off the water and refill the tank. They will get a bit of condensation from time to time.

i also suggest using a portable tank, filled with premixed fuel your first run, to make sure the oil pump is pumping. that just doubles the oil, no harm except a little smoke. but you are sure the motor is getting oil.

personally, on a 1984 that has a VRO pump, i would disable the oil side of the pump, and use premixed fuel all together. or it would up grade to the NEW OMS pump. the original VRO, have been problematic. if interested it is an easy conversion.

Thanks for the info guys! Where is the best place to pick up a manual for this engine? Ebay?
I was told by a friend who has run JohnnyRudes all his life, He told me I should ALWAYS use a premixed fuel even with the VRO working, just a leaner mix, your right it smokes a bit more but even if the VRO fails your still safe. Would sinthetic oil smoke less? Thanks again.

You can get a genuine 'rude service manual at marineengine.com or ebay. Synthetic oil should smoke less.

if your oil injection is working OK, why mix gas and oil? Either remove it and mix or leave it alone. if you add oil to the gas, and use the premix system, you need to run double oil (50::1 premix)to make it safe. What is the sense in that?

I don't really know?? I'm guessing that if the VRO pump fails, he's still safe to a certain point with the oil mix in the gas tank. Seems like a lot of bother and extra smoke, but he has never had an oil problem with any OMC outboard. Of coarse I don't no if he's ever had a oil pump go bad???

Re: Two Evinrude 90 questions

disable the vro, and just premix, you know it has oil then. cut the oil hose 2 inches from where it inters the motor, put a plug in it (bolt) secured with a hose clamp. then unplug the wires to the VRO pump, and the wire to the Oil Tank. remove fuel line at carb, pump primer bulb, till you have premix fuel there, install hose, and go boating, with out oil worries.

synthetic smokes less. you have the original VRO, known to fail.

evinrude manuals, outboardbooks.com or searayman13 on ebay. do not buy Seloc or Clymer, you will still end up buying a OEM manual.

Tash is right on the money (as usual) either replace the Oil system with the latest (and very reliable) type, OR premix, to combine the two is a waste of time and Oil.

Re: Two Evinrude 90 questions

Your engine has two temp switches, one on each head. There should be a knife connector hiding under a rubber sleeve close to the switch. Pull back the sleeve and ground the connector to the head. When the key switch is on, the horn should sound when grounded. This test verifies the circuit and horn work. If you want to test the switches, you will have to pull the head covers, remove the switches and test the switch according to the factory service manual.
