The days are longer & it's getting warmer.
Got an itch to go to Catalina. Anyone want to Buddy Boat over & back. Right now, at Two Harbors, until May 15, you pay for 2 days mooring and can stay for 7.

Weekend of 5/18 looks Ok. I've missed the 7 days for 2 special anyway. Took the boat to Oxnard today to check some work I've done & it's running good.
Do you have a dinghy & VHF radio?
We will probably launch, the evening of the 17th, at Alamitos Bay, spend the night in a slip & get an early start the 18th. Return early the 19th or 20th. You don't want to cross in the afternoon or any time they are predicting high winds.
If you've never been to the Island, the choice is pretty much Avalon or Two Harbors (the Isthmus). Avalon is a much larger town, about 5,000 population, touristy with the Wrigley Gardens, the Casino (No Gambling), etc. Two Harbors is more of a boating destination, a couple of hundred people in a small town, very pretty.
There are no slips at either location. You're assigned a mooring or the String Line, if it's operating. You can get to shore in their Shore Boat, don't recall the charge. It's MUCH better if you bring a dinghy.
There are also several Anchorages where you can drop a hook and live aboard or rent a campsite ashore. Again you need a dinghy.
Any crossing is subject to cancellation due to high winds. In good weather people have been known to paddle a kayak across.

I'm good with two harbors. I was informed that launching from San Pedro is the shortest distance to the island. Would it be ok if we depart from there? I also think staying at a slip overnight before leaving is a good idea. I do have a VHF radio but no dinghy, sorry. I found out the water taxi is $5 each way and each person. I was counting on staying at a mooring in catalina since I read the it could be dangerous to stay on anchor only. But we can contemplate dropping an anchor with two boats.

Two Harbors is a good Destination.
When spending the night I like to go to Alamitos, it's a nice Marina with guest slips that have Shore power, Water & Clean Restrooms. You need to get to the Harbor Masters Office before they close, inorder to pay for the slip & get a key to the rest room.
If you prefer to use the Shore Boat that's up to you. However, If you & your Mrs only go ashore twice that's $40. Big 5 has 2 person inflatables starting at $24.99. My old one is pretty rummy so I think I'll go over and get a 3 man for us.
I mentioned anchoring because you have to anchor at the "Boat in Camp sites". We'll pickup a Mooring at Two Harbors and live on the boat.

Didn't get a 3 Man Got a 2 Man. It was 69.99 & included oars and a hand pump to inflate it.
