two part question.....

i have twin 1987 200 hp suzuki's on a 313 chris craft scorpion. In the past this forum has helped in resolving some issues with one engine for which i'm grateful.

new issue with what was the "good engine".

it appears that the top crankshaft seal is failing and with it the top cylinder has developed a worsening rod knock.

i'm kind of curious if a top bearing wear issue is usually the root cause of the seal failure or if the seal tends to go first leading to the top bearing and rod bearing failure?

6 or 7 years ago i went through this with the other engine, so its now two for two as a failure on these engines.

what has been others experience with the suzuki v6 in particular and others in general as to longevity of these top seals and bearings?

no not always, I will say if the seal go first it will lead to the top bearing and rod bearing failure, but it won't always fail as I have run my suzuki for quite some time with a broken crank seal, it just doesn't idle well ..... but you are gonna replace it anyway aren't you?

yes, i will install a rebuilt powerhead as soon as i'm done with the rebuild process.

this leads me to a similar but related question. when viewing the exploded parts diagrams, i noticed that around 92 or 93 suzuki changed the seal ring arrangements. before this date, they used 5 (although the picture in the suzuki shop manual only identifies 4!) and after they use 7..... on the same part number crank.....the early cranks were machined for 7 rings but used 5...... My question, why the change? if they machined for 7 from the git go why only use 5 until the early 90's? were they anticipating a problem and trying to see how big a problem it would become......something fishy here!
