Re: Two people died

I always felt jittery walking on the water and never thought driving on the water was a good idea.

Re: Two people died

While tragic, this was not a wise thing to do.
I've seen more than one vehicle go through the ice.

Re: Two people died

The third occupant was the daughters friend, she is in critical condition as we speak, a prayer would be thoughtful. He was driving and did not see the break in the ice, there were about a hundred other cars and trucks on the lake that day. He just didn't know the area. Tragic.

Re: Two people died

Last weekend, the northern winds pushed the ice north leaving a big gap in the ice on lake Erie. There must have been 20 to 30 Quads and about 60 guys that got stranded. The Coast Guard said the rescue effort cost over $22,000. Guess what? They plan to pass off the cost to the guys that got stranded.

They should have known better. The news showed where they had used pallets to make a bridge to cross the gap to go out on the lake. I think if I had known the ice was moving away from the shore, I sure wouldn't go on out there no matter how good the fishing was. BTW, they will also fine you if you lose your vehicle in the water.

My kind of ice fishing is when I get a pack of it out of the freezer :D

Hey SS this is what I would do, if I was in charge I would take the grand total and divide it among the people involved and send them a bill and the only reason I would do that is because they built a make shift bridge. They could all be apart of the Stupid Tax Club:D

Re: Two people died

I have mixed views on billing the people rescued.

First of all, they have already paid for their own rescue in that they hopefully have paid taxes all their lives. Do we need to "bill" the homeowner for the fire truck that came to his house to put out the fire?

I know that the fishermen willfully took a risk and did some stupid things. If that is the case, we can do away with all tax related funding of rescue squads and just bill the stupid people for all stupid acts.

I doubt if that will occur because we as a country now do not hold anyone accountable for their own actions, wise or stupid.

I better stop now before this reply receives the smite button.

Re: Two people died

the fire dept. and rescues due bill for there services
this has been a common practice for decades
the problem with the billing is it can never cover the actual cost
of running a fire or rescue service
M.
ps. been there done that

Re: Two people died

If they wasn't doing the rescue, they would be training or standing by. One could even think that maybe they were earning their paycheck for a change :D

It is great that we have a great service that does come to the aid when we need them. I agree that is what our taxes are for. Who would they charge the fuel and materials to when doing training exercises?

Re: Two people died

Never received a bill whenever I've called.

Another department tried to charge a nominal fee for services. Went to court. Judge said service was already paid for.
There are many user fees, more and more every day in fact.

Perhaps we should scrap taxes all together and have a pay as you go plan.

Re: Two people died

Tragic story but happens every year despite repeated warnings and cautions. Lake ice is no place for inexperienced people to be driving yet hundreds do so. The local fish hut operators are on the ice all day, everyday and they KNOW the lake. Conditions can change by the hour and where there was once 18" of ice could be open water. Worse is when pressure cracks open up then freeze over with a skim of ice. Looks safe but may only be 1 or 2" of ice. Two people yesterday here experienced just that when their car dropped thru the ice into a pressure crack. Luckily they were able to escape.

Its not unheard of for locals here to drive 5 miles out into the lake for the best fishing grounds but you won't catch me even parking on the ice at shore.

Re: Two people died

Our family used to fish Winnabago frequently, had a cottage on the east shore.
It is big, 10 miles wide, 22 miles long, wide open, with many creeks a several rivers flowing into it.

It is not uncommon to have thousands (5000 + ) on the lake at one time. We used to drive out 2.5 to 3 miles.

They mark the "roads" on the ice by "planting" used xmas trees in the ice, and they install huge bridges over the cracks in the ice. Have seen some cracks that were 15' wide, with a bridge over the crack.

The only 3 really bad scenarios on that lake is to stray too far from the "road", and not be able to find it when you want to leave; to have a large gap open while you are on the ice; or to venture out on the ice after it starts getting soft and honeycombed.

The current ice thickness is reported at 26".

THere are 6000 fishing shacks out there.

Sturgeon spearing season just got underway. Here is a photo of last years biggest, 172#.

Re: Two people died

T2F if the house is burning there is a good chance that is an accident (don't know the percentages of a non accident fire) I don't think building a bridge to go out further on the ice is an accident. And if somehow I lost my mind and you found me on the ice and in those fishermen s mess I would be more than happy to pay to get me off that ice.Money I can make back but I can't come back to life :eek:And yes I have a lot of memories of a lot of Stupid Tax that I have paid and choose not to repeat :D

That Lake Erie incident has been the subject of a really protracted thread in S.H.T.
