two piece driveshaft question 150 hp Johnson

Hi, 1992 Johnson 150hp VJ150EXENC My buddy's lower unit would not come off even welded up a slide hammer apparatus and it only laughed at me. Cut through the water pump and shaft (with much difficulty) with a sawzall and about 10 blades and dropped the lower unit. Am rigging up a puller arrangement for the end of the shaft, not sure now much heat the shaft will take at the crank end. There is about 1" of exposed driveshaft up top to heat. Anyway my question is: can I seperate the driveshaft just under the bearing housing assembly or does the whole 2 piece shaft have to come out as a unit and then be seperated? Thanks, Ken

Kind of hard to understand what you're trying to get apart. Are you talking about getting the upper part of the cut driveshaft out of the crank or the bottom part out of hte shaft below the water pump?

If you're trying to get the remainder of the top part out of the bottom part, a puller is all you need. No need to pull the bearing housing cap (under the pump) and no need to heat it.

If you're trying to get the upper out of the crank, you may want to get that before tackling the lower unit work. Many times the splines will be ruined on both the upper driveshaft and the crankshaft.

Dhadley, thanks for the reply. Actually both parts out. The upper drive shaft is now cut flush with the bottom of the exhaust housing and I will try a puller arrangement on the shaft to try to remove from the crank. I was wondering if a little heat on the upper part of the exposed shaft will help? Part two is I have a two part drive shaft that connects together just below the upper bearing housing by a roll pin (the two shafts are splined together). Can I access that and remove the pin without taking the lower unit apart (bearing carrier and pinion gear etc)? Thanks for the tip about the upper splines might be bad and this project will end abruptly. Ken

That pin is in the cup that the upper pops into, not between the two shafts. You shouldn't have to take the unit apart just to replace the upper shaft.

OK Thanks, I wasn't sure, just saw the pin and figured the two shafts were pinned together. Helps a lot. Ken
