Re: Two wire trim to three wire trim

Why would you want to go from two wire to three wire when the two wire system is electrically superior? Two wire uses relays. They are standard 5 pin relays. You can find them used in U-Pull-It auto junkyards to save money.

If you are INSTALLING a two wire system to a three wire electric system, then it is simple. You throw out all the three wire wires and start from scratch. the switch now is only carrying signal voltage to the relays so you only need a paired 16 gauge wire back to the engine and relays. The center terminal can be powered from the "B: terminal of the ignition switch. You can also salvage the relay bases from autos and rewire them. That and the relays will save you a lot of money.

If I pulled the relays off of an old car how would I wire up the relays? Can I do it with out buying a harness

Yes, I have done it a couple of times. You need to use a small screwdriver or pick to remove the wires and connectors from the socket. Then you need to reinsert heavy wires into the sockets that service the motor and ground (so they can carry the 30 amps. Thus: To make two sockets for use you will need about 4 and cut the wires so you have about 6 inches.

You look at the top of the relays and there is a schematic showing grounds, hot, and signal wires. It will take about an hour to make your own harness with the salvages sockets. If you use relays and sockets fro GM cars Many of them have seals to make the complete relay/socket waterproof. --better than stock

here is a harness I made from oval relays rather than the square ones but shape does not matter. As long as they are 5 pin they will work.

The red wires are power to the relays from the battery. The black wires are grounds. The purple wires are power from the relays to the tilt motor and the orange wires are signal from the tilt switch at the dashboard.

These relays are default to ground so when you energize one relay it send power down one wire to the motor while the other wire from the motor is grounded. The process is reversed when you energize the other relay.

On these relays:
E is power in from battery.
C and F are grounds.
A is power to the motor
D is signal in from dash.

The relay is market inside so you know which terminal is which.

Square relays use numbers like 85.

It is really simple but if you feel overwhelmed, as a friend who is good with electricity to help. It is really no more difficult than home wiring.

use a standard 2w trim relay harness. Break off the middle tab on trim relays so that your five blade relay becomes a 4 blade relay. connect black wire from trim motor to common ground. wire up everything else like it is same as 2w.

that's all there is to it.

Not sure but I think he wants to use a two wire motor with a three wire harness that has no relays--he didn't really answer my question about that.

then you just buy a 819514A1 relay harness and install it. the green and blue wires from switch become your green and blue relay control wires (instead of going directly to motor).

However, it is more common to want to use the $80 3w trim motor instead of the $150 2w trim motor. Both motors work equally well on 1988-1992 force when properly wired.

directly wiring trim to a console switch is not a very good idea. too much amperage needed.
relay systems pull power from starter circuit and high amperage wiring is limited to about 30" length.
directly wired system is less reliable to operate across all battery conditions and prone to premature motor or switch failures.
