I recently purchased a 1989 Basstracker TXS 17. I used to have a 1982 tx17 years ago and I started to notice that the trailer was awful short for this boat. Does anyone own a late 80's vintage TX17 that could measure the trailer length from the center of the hitch ball to the back of the trailer frame. I get the feeling that this trailer is for a 16' boat instead of a 17.5'. Many thanks in advance for the help.

Re: TX17 Basstracker trailer length

yes its not uncommon to use a 16ft trailer for 17ft boats, they call them extra long or extra wide or a combination of both but for the wide, they use longer cross members to widen it but the trailer otherwise is the same and for the long they go from an 8ft to a 10ft tongue length to accommodate longer boats so your trailer might be shown as a 16 ft trailer but you need to see if the model number ends with "x" standing for extra wide and "L" standing for long or maybe both.

I have a 17ft flatboat with a magic tilt 1250-1500lb class trailer and the model number is MT16XWL, the MT16W is for 14-16ft boats and is 61" total width while the MT16XWL is for 16-17ft boats and is 75" total width.

if you have a tilt trailer then measure your tongue length from hitch to the other end, its a relatively simple thing to swap out to a longer 10ft tongue if yours is 8ft or less (you never want to go longer then a 10ft tongue or it can be unsafe).

if your tongue is welded to the trailer you can still make it longer by welding on an extension but its not a home project, if done it should be reinforced at the joint and welded by a professional welder.

are you sure it isn't just wrongly positioned too far forward on the trailer? lets see what you are talking about, show us some pictures

It is kind of a moot subject now. I moved the boat up to the correct position on the trailer and started to extend the tongue. It was rotten so I started to check the rest of the trailer. It was rotting from the inside out. The paint was all that was holding some of it together so it is hung from the ceiling beams while I search for another trailer. Thanks for the replies anyway.

Do yourself a favor, make sure you buy a galvanized trailer.

when shopping a good rule of thumb is that the trailer from end to end should be AT LEAST 110% of the length of the boat from bow to transom

good luck shopping
