Posted similar before, hoping I could get a couple of the experts here to maybe chime in...

I am going from the 898 (type 1) drive and bellhousing to the MR/Alpha style. Also swapping out the engine to a 228. I have the engine out of the boat. I know I will have to swap over the flywheel housing and rear mounts, along with all of the controls which I have from front to back, and other miscellaneous parts (water inlet fitting, etc). But here, to me, is the tricky part:

Is there any physical difference in the gimbal rings or transom assemblies that would prevent this swap?

Keep in mind I have the complete powertrain (carb to prop) for the 228 and MR drive. Any parts I would need I do have. I am just really hoping to not have to take my old transom assembly off of the boat, who knows what problems could be lurking in that department.

I am also swapping to the bigger trim rams and trim pump. I have all those parts too.

If there is anything I am overlooking..please let me know. I plan on getting the engine in today and I really dont want to pull it back out for sure.

Thanks again guys...

Ayuh,....If you swap ALL of the driveline from the donor boat,...
There'll be Absolutely No fitment issues...

All I can say to your question is,.... Try It....

Generally speakin', Yes, everything is interchangeable...
But,...
I wouldn't take Any bets on whether All the bolt holes will line up,...

You're only 6 nuts from the Total Swap out...

And this is very true. Only thing is my transom assembly on the boat now is in VERY nice shape. The new to me Alpha's has some corrosion, not very much though.

The flywheels are the same on these engines, correct?

Fitment sounds like a word to me if used in an advicical way :D

I am going to try leaving the transom assembly in. If it works, great. If not...she comes out again I guess.

One more thing..there is a reverse lock out valve on the old shift linkage plate. I dont see one on the new riser mounted linkage. Is this something that needs to be sorted out too??

You guys are gold..thanks again..

At the very least, remove the gimble housing anyway, and put in a new gasket. It cant hurt (they are about 8 bucks) and you are there anyway. Hate to have a leak there because you didnt.

This is the foam gasket that circles the gimbal housing, right?

Everything went Perfect! All the old mounting hardware swapped in fine, and it looks like a go!

Used the existing transom assembly and gimbal housing as they were in MUCH better shape than the donor engine's. Drive mocks up fine, everything lines up.

Even the newer style shift plate and all cables are in and working!! All I had to do was swap over high side power steering line from the old pump because of the molded end near the rack. I kept a list of the little things should anyone be doing the same thing in the future. :)
