What exactly is Type C lube? How is it different from ordinary lubricants and why is it necessary?

Thanks

Re: Type C lower unit fluid

For one thing, it is thinner than ordinary outboard gear lube. More like ATF. Other than that, I don't think I'm qualified to say exactly what additives may be in it.

The primary difference is the "conductivity" of the fluid itself. The primary use of the lube is in electric shift lower units (OB and stern drives mainly a la OMC). The lube won't conduct electricity as well which could essentially "short circuit" the shift system on OMC Electric Shift Stern Drives, Johnson or Evinrude Electric shift Outboards.
