Is it necessary to use a heat resistant paint when painting the powerhead of a motor? Motor in question is a '70 Johnson 6hp. The Rustoleum Enamel label says its good up to 200?F.

Thanks!

No. Most older motors were painted with garden variety lacquer. Use chromate proimer on any bare metal.

Any outboard running near 200* F is in serious trouble.

I used Dupont high-temp engine enamel when I rebuilt my powerhead. Granted the engine will never come near the 500 degree mark that the paint advertises it can withstand, but I chose engine enamel due to its ability to hold up against chemicals such as fuel, oil and grease. So whatever you use for paint, make sure gas and oil won't remove it.
