I am attempting to replace the u joints and bellow, and gimbal bearing on my 1986 sylvan 3.0 omc.. I removed the six nuts and the lift rams and the housing slides apart about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and then seems to get tight. I even took the hose clamp loose on the upper bellow thinking that was holding the u joint!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I had trouble getting my drive off I had a similar scenario. I wedged some plywood between the drive and the housing and worked it out that way. I have also read about others who hook the rams back up and push the drive off with the hydraulics. Good luck!

shift to full foward at control,if that doesnt do it some use the rams to take it off others 2x4 and kind of slam the drive down to bust it loose.

Ah, good call bigskiohio - Forgot to mention to shift in forward as well, heck that could have been the one missing ingredient... After coming across so many 'worse case scenario's' , we tend to skip the simple steps first...

Aloha everyone, new guy here.

1968 Willard Sea Force 730 (Navy Seal Boat)
Volvo Penta TAMD41B with 290 DP outdrive

I am having noise from the frontside of the transom assembly where the jackshaft attaches. There is also a slight bit of lateral movement (1/32" or less) to the jackshaft. Is that normal?

Took the screw from the top of the transom assy and squirted as much oil as possible in there. It wouldn't take much before spilling over. Seems its more of a vent than a fill hole.

Never worked on a outdrive before but have rebuilt gas engines and worked on diesel engines. Not a novice to boating, just outdrives.

Am hoping to learn from this series of posts. If I need to start my own posting, kindly say so.

Aloha, Dean.
