u joint bellow

Hi, I have an 88 omc cobra 350. The drive was removed by the previous owner and most of the parts were put in a box. I am going to try to replace the bellows and mount the outdrive tonight. The question I have is on the u-joint bellow. I know the transom side is held on by a clamp. What I dont know is what holds the other end. I am guessing it is the same method used for the exhaust bellow. Which looks like an internal snap ring. But I am not sure. I found what i believe to be the exhaust snap ring in the cooler. So the parts are somewhat scattered. I ordered a service manual almost 3 weeks ago and have never received it. Who knows where that is.
As always thanks for the help.

Re: u joint bellow

There is no snap ring on the ujoint bellows. The bellows lip fits over the lip in the pivot housing. The drive (when installed) hold the bellows tightly in the groove.

Thank you for the reply Don. View attachment 107183
Looking at this diagram I saw the snap ring to the right of the exhaust bellow. Am I correct in its placement?

It's a 3D drawing, I added some thru-lines to your drawing.

Re: u joint bellow

That is what i was thinking the sequence was. Thanks.
I dont know if you have been following my threads, but we are going to get it wet this Saturday. I have the cooling system holding 20# of pressure with no drop in 4 hours.(which is as long as i wanted to wait) Bought a complete outdrive, put a new pump in it. And a few other odds and ends. I am hoping to have an event free trip with it. But if there are any problems I will see how well my pwc will pull it.

Hey Don:
I also thought a ring was more aft but I think its called a retainer. Let me know because I'm gonna be doing the same job this weekend. Also, do you what size the allen wrench is for removing the pivot housing? Last question, how do you know when the alignment bar is all the way in? Thanks for your help.

You need to start your own thread.

There is no other reatiner.
