The u-joints on 1998 Wellcraft with VP SX-M are reportedly "shot (1 almost seized)". Would the replacement be #3860842 that is the u-joint yolk assembly? I've seen the for about $450, to an amaz*n price of $281. Can anyone verify part number and know if the amaz*n one would be cheap crap?

Re: U-joint replacement

That's the correct number. You can have the old u-joints pressed out and new ones pressed back in if the shaft is good. The one that you are looking at on Amazon is a GLM brand which I wouldn't use. I would pay the extra money for the Volvo one if I was replacing the whole shaft.

If you do replace the whole shaft, I would have a Volvo shop install it for you to make sure the shims are done correctly.

Just so you know, GLM stands for Good Luck Marine. I would never use any of their parts.

Tail, thanks for the link. It's pretty cool that Don S is still helping out.

Bruce, I suspected as much on the GLM - thanks for confirming. Are they made from (I'll just say foreign) steel?

I wiped out a yoke pressing mine out once. I now just bring the whole drive down to the shop and let them have at it.

IF???? The yoke is still in useable shape???????
Then just changing the u-joint is the way to go.
I think Sierra 18-6406 is the part#
Do yourself a favor. Get a universal joint tool.
I bought one from Snap On, 25years ago and it's paid for itself over and over.
Oh yea a torch is a handy item too.
