What is the best brand of molybdenum trioxide grease to use for u joint spline? I can't seem to find anything except Walmart brand super tech Moly grease or Valvoline moly. Should I use this or something else. I'll buy whatever is best.

Yep this is what OMC always recommended and keep in mind Volvo just adapted the OMC design when they went to the gimble design drives. I have been using it 15+ years and those splines have next to no wear. Just pull the drive once a year and grease the splines and (if they are grease-able) the gimble bearing and u joints (with marine trailer wheel bearing grease). I have replaced the gimble once but the u joints are the same ones from when I bought the boat in 2002.

BTW if you can't find the Volvo 'white' sealer you can use OMC gasket sealer, Merc perfect seal or Permatex Aviation on the 6 drive mounting studs...and here's another tip, since there is no gasket between the pivot housing (where the drive mounts) and the drive upper gear housing, smear a nice coating of the same OMC/Evinrude triple guard grease on those mounting surfaces. This will prevent them from seizing together due to corrosion between the 2 aluminum castings. This can happen esp around the bosses for the 6 mounting studs and can cause you to have a real bad day trying to get the drive off. The OMC Cobra whose design they mostly copied had a gasket between those parts and when coated with OMC gasket sealer, there is no corrosion there and the drive comes right off, even in salt water.

you're welcome!
15+ years of salt water maintenance teaches you a few things.

I'm having a little trouble finding the Triple guard grease locally. Is there another product I can use for this season?

That should be OK, I like the Evinrude grease because it is very water resistant. If you have an engine dealer that sells Evinrude outboards local to you they will have it. Mercuiser also sells a spline grease that you can use as well.

Excellent. I'll order some triple guard grease to keep on hand.

Thanks again.

Merc has a green Gimbal bearing and U joint grease. I've used the Penzoil red synthetic EP grease for 15 yrs, and my Gimbal brg. and disassembled U joints are as good as new. New U joints are sold as 'permanently lubed' with a plug to block the zerk hole. But I always install the zerk and flush the air from the cross passages, then add more until the end caps move, and I squeeze them back on to bleed the excess. This takes at nearly a full pump stroke on the grease gun. Far more than the mfg. added. Caution: if you ever add grease to an assembled U joint, do it carefully and with very little. It won't take much, if any, and if you force it you will blow the seals from their grooves, and have to disassemble them to reseat.
