...unless you have the 3-7/8" spanner wrench to remove the retainer nut behind the u-joints, you will be primed to break the retainer. Should you possibly remove the retainer, you will need to redo brearing preloads.
Best to get a qualified repair facility to do the u-joint job for you. :)

I can see buying the 3 7/8 spanner wrench but how hard is the rest. I have put ujoints in drive shafts in autos..big difference?

Actually depends on the gearset installed. The old style will slide off the yoke after you remove the nut(#28, this link http://mercstuff.com/fichea.htm. No pre-load pre se.The newer style gearset has the pre-load adjusted during assembly.

You might not have to remove the drive shaft.

On mine I used a grinder to give me clearance on part of the retaining nut so I could remove the ujoint.

Ditto.. I did the same thing with a die grinder till the brg cap would pass, ground one of the slots a little wider and deeper. If you have changed many u-joints should not be a prob.

None, as far as the actual u-joint itself is concerned....

fwiw...
to ea. his own.

i got the spanner tool to remove the nut.

also, if ya don't have one. a ujoint press is a real winner. and the special merc tool for ujoint replacement is real nice too. made short, easy work of ujoints anyways...
