I recently purchased a used boat with a 1989 88spl evinrude outboard. At the time of purchase the seller did not have the key to start the motor so I paid him a price I would have paid for just the boat and trailer. Seller swore the motor ran well. I bought a key and cranked up the motor and the motor was running at 6000 rpm when started. I finally took off the cover for the carbs and found this foreign object in the bottom carb in the right hand barrel (when facing front of motor). The object was keeping the butterfly of the carb open. After removing the object the motor idled fine. The motor itself looks very good, starts easy and 120 psi on all four cylinders. Can anyone identify the object? I have never seen the inside of an outboard but have done a little checking on the internet. Can this object have come from the main bearing (bearing pin or needle) and worked it?s way into the carb? Someone tell me that?s impossible and this is not an internal part of the motor. The black on one end of the object is not grease and appears to be paint. Hopefully I was able to post these pics.
Thanks to all in advance.
