Whenever you think you have been lucky with expenses on boating, it somehow finds a way to catch up. My tow explorer stalled outside of Wrigley field and the fuel pump is gone. ANyone have any recommendations on what type to repalce with? ANy tricks to this repair? I have reaplced these before in a mustang, but not in this vehicle. (And the part is like $300 bucks)

Cant get around it Rocket, Highpressure fuel pump and if you aftermarket be prepared to tear into it again as aftermarket has tendacy to fail.

I have cut the floor to gain access to the pump thus saving alot of time dropping the tank, just be careful of sparks and use heat shields if you do cut the floor for access

Aftermarkets will average about a year.
Get in there and mark the bottom of the Explorer with a grease pen, drop tank, tape off lines, cut hole in floor big enough to reach in and take pump out next time without removing tank.

I would go with an oem pump for reliability. I think the big thing to remember is drain the tank and clean it. The number one cause of early pump failure is water or dirt in your fuel. If you don't clean it out you can bet you will be doing it again.

Drop the tank. Check it for foreign poo poo (can't rock the tank if it's bolted to the vehicle).
#1 cause is age, #2 is not keeping enough fuel in the tank to cool the pump (ALWAYS keep at least a 1/4 tanks worth in the vehicle).
Some pumps come with a plastic housing assembly around it hence the price.
With quality parts you "shouldn't" have to change it again before the rest of the vehicle dies so there's no sense in cutting holes in it to save the little bit of time it takes versus dropping the tank (done on a rack it takes "me" about 30 minutes).
