It sounds like he and the guy on the other ski were a bit too close to the sail boat. Why would anyone run their ski that close to another vessel ?

According to my friend i work with the anchor was 40ft from the boat when it drifted when he hit it.

That is so crazy. You really have to scout the area you are in before you just start doing 60mph. Learned that lesson from my dirt bike days. Fortunately nothing like this ever happend. Very sad.

Sad story. Here in AZ it is state law that no craft come closer than 100ft to another craft while above wakeless speed. It's a good law but I don't think I've ever been out and not seen it broken by someone. Usually jet skiers. All the same, I get a horrible feeling when I see something like this.

Although I don't have the newspaper copy there were 3 deaths on PWCs here in the last 3 weeks. A couple on a PWC were run down by a larger boat in John's Pass and there was another death where 2 PWCs were riding one behind the other in the Gulf of Mexico and the front one did a 180 and the back one didn't know that to steer you need to keep throttle and crashed into the front one. Very bad start to the boating season.

Ironically, PWC are some of the safest vessels on the water. A minority of folks have managed to become a pain in the butt with their PWC, but overall, it’s a safe vessel.

The nat’l park service has recently been lifting the ban on PWCs in certain parks. The reason is after studying several years’ worth of data, they can’t find any problem with them, not a safety issue, not a noise issue, not an environmental issue.

Here in NY you have to become licenced to drive one - at any age. I dont know how it is elsewhere, but you cant take em alot of places and having to get a licence alone isnt worth it for me...

Id rather take my 15' boat anywhere i want to go rather than be limeted, plus have the chance of something like this happen if i werent careful.

ah as sad as it is it happens all the time down at lake of the Ozarks during memorial day weekend and during alot of the summer. People just need to be more aware of their surroundings and slow down.
