If it is the only seal leaking, it can be done in the driveway, with a good compliment of tools, the seal, and the shop manual close by. No need to drop the lower unit, provided an air test passes.

This process will be explained in depth in most shop manuals, but also try this link for procedures common to all L/U's....
CLICK THIS LINK

Thanks 12footer! When I changed the gear lube AND screw gaskets, the old lube did have some water in it. I just wanted to see if the gaskets would do the trick, and I got my answer! This motor sat for 10 years before I got it running again, and I'm sure all of the seals need replacing anyway. I have a clymer manual but IMHO it is worthless. I'll buy an OMC manual that covers my motor. Will the whole gearcase need to be taken apart??? Thanks Again!!!

Mercboy , If the motor sat for 10 years before you got it running it is probably safe to assume that the waterpump is in need of replacement.I recommend that you drop lower unit and change it along with the driveshaft and shiftrod seals as long as you're there.

OB, I just changed just the impeller about a month ago. I'll go ahead and get the full kit and do it right this time! How tough is it to replace the Prop shaft seal???
