I was finishing up at the lake yesterday and decided to run my kicker for a few minutes just to get it some run time. It started first pull but seemed a bit sluggish after a minute or two. I "think" I backed the throttle off but I'm not positive and put in in neutral. Next thing I know it was winding out 100,000 rpms for about 3-5 seconds then died (no bangs or clunks).

Now there's NO compression (or should I say, cylinder pressure) when I pull the cord and no indication it would start.

I can pull it off and tear it apart, I've rebuilt a few of these but I'm going to be on the lake for the next few days and don't really feel like spending my time this weekend on a tear down if I can help it. Plus, parts will be hard to get after Saturday morning.

Anyone else have this happen? It's moored on the lake at the moment so I didn't do any troubleshooting on the dock. I suppose I should first check the flywheel. Maybe the woodruff key broke? The flywheel nut was still on but I was chased off the lake by darkness.

Check your flywheel/ key.(flywheel loose on crank)
0 compression on both cylinders not likely without some serious noise.

That was my thought too after some consideration. I sure hope so. I can fix that on the water. After all, I guess the woodruff is designed to shear off and kill the motor in these instances. I'll be sure check the magnets while the flywheel is off. We're having an extremely rare early morning thunderstorm at the moment here in western Washington so I'm not going anywhere near the water for a couple more hours.

Yep - just the woodruff key!

I found one at NAPA in the nearest little town (had to buy like 4 or 5 since I didn't know what size it took). I know we're supposed to get genuine OMC but I'm not real worried about it for this little kicker. Changed it out tied to the dock and torqued it down (yep - had a torque wrench on board already) and ran it for 3-4 hours.

Good to hear! You may use anything as key, I've in emergency used a tooth-pick just to get the flywheel aligned. It is kept in place by the friction and not by the key itself. Most important is to clean out crank taper and flywheel cone with acetone to get rid of all grease/oil. Must be completely dry!!
