I'm replacing my 2000 Volvo Penta 3.0 GSM-A (cracked block due to overheating). I took the "combination manifold" off today and found this: 2013-05-14_15-06-15_578.jpg2013-05-14_15-06-21_479.jpg2013-05-14_15-06-29_233.jpg

Why is there a hole on one side of the bottom of the manifold? Is this something else that happened during the overheat?
Thanks in advance.

Cracked blocks normally crack from freeze damage, and freezing also pops out core plugs and cracks manifolds.

Did you winterize the boat for winter?

Don,

Thanks for the response. The boat was (I thought) winterized as best I could 18 months ago and has been sitting since. Unfortunately, I could not afford to replace the motor last summer so it has sat since the previous winter. Based on my previous luck with this boat, I am assuming that the manifold is toast and I will be shelling out another $500 that I don't have. Anyways, do you have any suggestions on how to test the manifold? Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it. Rob

If the manifold isn't cracked you can probably just replace the freeze plug and reuse that manifold.

It seems your luck might have changed!! Usually the manifold cracks and it's useless.
Try putting the plug back in,use a good sealer, then test it for leaks into the exhaust passages/
