I look after the water meter reading and billing at work. It appears I've been recording a meter incorrectly since April (a straight number instead of a factor of 10). This is an $80 000. (gulp) error that'll mean a debit to one municipality and a bill to the neighboring one. I should've caught this earlier... I think I'm in big trouble...

Re: uh oh...

ummm that means for a crappy day... its like waiting for mom to find out your report card so she can pull out the belt. Easier to just tell her and get it over with... so git into the boss's office and let him know so you can git it over with. :)

It's even worse when your boss is mad! It costs YOU money!
EDIT: If you do make a $50,000 mistake, I'll buy the shots to help you get over it.

Re: uh oh...

I've made everyone aware of what's happened. I need an exact number for the Finance department... which I just calculated to be $73 019.81. Hmm. There's a lot of blank unhappy faces around me today. There is one geek who thinks it's funny 'cause he's usually the one who screws things up. Yer' right though, let's get this fixed up, finish up the day, pick up junior, go home, play Hot Wheels and have a beer. This isn't money we're 'out', it's a shuffle amongst the municipalities. I don't make many mistakes... apparently when I do they're quite spectacular!

Magster you should of waited until after the first of the new year to say anything. Don't you know that Layoffs start at the 3rd of the new year. I hope your not at the top of the list..
Sorry to hear about your mistake, but it happens...

Re: uh oh...

lol....I've made bigger mistakes than 50k! My biggest one was almost $200,000, but most goofs are around 10-15k, and happen once maybe every 6 months. Service level agreements suck! But I've been around when people have made million dollar mistakes. The company doesn't really care about the money so much......it's looking bad in front of their customer that makes them mad.

Re: uh oh...

mag, you are a big man for letting someone know about the mistake instead of just hiding it until someone found out! Telling them may be your saving grace, instead of getting fired!

Just tell them that someone taught you to read it like that and that its a good thing you caught THEIR mistake! :D :D

Sounds like nothing was really lost. One municipality was getting something for nothing, so how can they complain when asked to pay.

I take my job seriously and look after things well. I won't get fired... or reprimanded but I have some more explaining to do. It's my mistake so I'll take the heat for it. It bothers me because my credibility is likely affected.

Re: uh oh...

I feel your pain. If I could get back all the sleep I've lost over things I've screwed up at work I'd probably live another 10 years. It really sucks when everyone around you knows you've made a mistake. You can really find out who your friends are at a time like that. Hey everyone screws up at work but not everyone gets found out. The more you do the more likely you are to make a mistake and the more important your job is the more costly the mistake will be. Life is short. Let it go.

Your credibility would be worse off if you just ignored the mistake and it was discovered later by someone else. Your boss might be upset about the mistake, but should realize what a good employee they have because you are man enough to admit the mistake and bring it to there attention!
