uh ohh changing my lower unit oil

1991 70 HP and once the lower unit was full, I closed the top vent and still pumped oil into the system from the bottom. i may have put too much pressure because oil came leaking out my water intake :-( did i blow a seal or someting

Well that was the wrong thing to do wasn't it

I guess the proper thing to tell you is to have it tested. Hopefully the seals are ok now that the pressure is off.

There are 2 seals on the input shaft. The oil bypassed them both.


You are probably ok, but not to hard to change. Do the water pump at the same time.

I doubt pumping a bit of oil past a seal would ruin it to the point of needing replacement. Maybe go back to square one, get your oil level correct and run the motor and see if it leaks. Probably no big deal. Upper seals would be an easy fix anyway. Good Luck!
