side mount control is a quicksilver commander 3000

I recently changed my water pump and the side mount control box[Quicksilver Commander 3000 broken shaft ] and I am now unable to get the system into gear or the correct position[fwd, rev,neut]. Forward seems to be very easy but reverse is a PITA. I may have messed the system by adjusting the linkage cables trying to get to the neutral position etc. I am seriously new to this and may have taken on a job to large for a beginner. Does anyone know of any sites etc that will show me how this can be corrected.

Thanks,
Surin

Hey Zeusky

I never worked with a commander 3000 before. And when I was digging around for a installation guide I came across this. Some have been recalled and another Iboats post about it and symptoms of another poster.

Check it out and see first if your falls under the recall. I'll keep digging for a install guide for you otherwise.

zeusky;

What is your engine s/n (two or four stroke) as the service manuals are available online, which will help you with the cable installation at the engine as well as how to use the prop to show you if you are in the correct gear or not.

If you follow this link, you will be able to download the Merc Controls newest manual which contains the Commander 3000.

Have you disconnected the Commander cables at the engine and just tried shifting by hand to ensure that the lower unit shifts OK, throughout it's range?
