unable to connect steering....

I have a 89 Bayliner capri with the steering cable intact...I cannot figure a way to connect the steering to my old motor(33 hp Johnson 1970 model year). Any ideas are appreciated...I am stumped!<br />Thanks,

johnnygee <br /><br />Without actually seeing what you have there someone may not be able to help you. Was the boat set up for a johnson before? Or Something else?

The boat was set-up for something else before I got it...Have no idea what motor it was...<br />About adapters? I checked out westmarine as djohns19 suggested, haven't found anything yet...need to check it out some more(don't know much about what I'm looking for as far as compatability) . As far as adapters, how much do they usually run on average djohns19? It is hard to tell if some will work or not! (I am mechanically inclined, but this is just new to me!) I do appreciate suggestions and/or comments...<br />Thanks again for your help,

johnny,<br /><br />Any boat of that year would have had installed as original equipment a steering cable that was intended to be used with engines equipped with a tilt tube.<br /><br />Before tilt tubes, single cable ("push/pull") types used a transon clamp braket and a ball swivel mounted to the engine.<br /><br />What you are going to run into is that your current cable is too long to be used in this manner.<br /><br />Your only real option, is to replace the seering cable with a shorter one designed to be used with a transom clamp bracket. You may be able to put a gentle loop in your cable to make it the right length. Without seeing it-don't know.<br /><br />Those transom clamp brackets are available at West Marine. <br /><br />Look at the top item on the second page of this URL. I had the same problem with a 70's Chrysler 120. I ended up buying a transom mount tilt tube and bolted it to the tilt tube. Mine happens to be from TH Marine. It looks like a piece of 1" cast iron gas line with threads on one end to screw your steering cable to. Pretty simple set up. Hope it helps

djohns19, Thanks! I'm starting to visualize what I may need! Oh, the cable---yes it is too long...One of the first things I noticed about this project, is that the end of the cable needs to be centered on the motor steering mount...and yes I can draw up some of the length enough to accomplish this.<br />wswaneyw, thanks for your suggestion as well. Now that I think about it, I can fabricate a sleeve of some sort to connect and secure my cable...<br />Thanks again guys!<br />If you run across anything else, let me know--It's appreciated.
