I decided to check the Cobra outdrive oil level and dang it, I can't remove the screw cap dip stick. I bought the boat used and took it in to get a full service on it a couple of seasons ago. The dip stick screw looked like it had been worked on and I figured the shop had changed the oil. I tried using a screwdriver and it just would not turn. I ended up removing the gear housing cover to check my oil level and it was a little low. I tried using an impact driver to turn the screw cap and still could not get it off. I also tried getting a pair of visegrips onto the dipstick shaft and it still wouldn't turn. I did notice that there is no washer between the head of the screw and the gear housing cover. Hope someone didn't decide to put some sort of loc-tite on the threads. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

UPDATE

I finally got the dipstick out. The O-Ring looked OK. Is there suppose to be a washer under screwhead?

If there's an o-ring in there, then you have the wrong seal. Those use a nylon washer. You can get them at any Bombardier dealer.

Your drive lube should be drained and refilled every season.

The Cobra's dipstick uses an o-ring.

Nope it's supposed to be those clear plastic (nylon?) washers....the newer joint venture ones used the o-rings for the dipstick......

Part number is 303067 o-ring oil indicator plug, comes in the upper seal kit.
Drive is a 1990 model does it qualify for the joint venture? either way I used a new o-ring to replace the old one and the indicator plug which actually has the groove for the o-ring to sit in.

Thanks for the replies! I do enjoy this forum!.....and yes, I've been lax in doing the oil change-out every season:redface:. Since my OMC Cobra is a '93, (probably one of the last Cobras and and I don't think it's an SX) it's possible that a o-ring is suppose to be on the dipstick. Just past the threaded section of the screwhead on top, there is a recessed groove and that's where the o-ring sits. I was just wondering if a nylon washer sits between the case cover and the screw head. I did put a washer on when I reinstalled the dipstick. and oh by the way, I will be changing out the oil. (2 - quarts of Johnson-Evinrude Gear Case Oil):)

It's a real common leak on those, I would pressure up the unit before putting the oil in and bubble test around the dipstick, o-ring, washer, both whatever because tight leakproof seal is whats most important. My parts fisch shows the o-ring for the dipstick and an o-ring for the case top cover thats it.
When you install the dipstick there is no need to crane it down, just tighten it till it stops and then just a extra little snug, I think it's 14inch lbs. Correction I just looked it up and found the spec 10 ft lbs.

Here is the diagram of your drive,
http://www.crowleymarine.com/brp_parts/3409.cfm

You will need to replace the large O-ring under the square cover you removed,
OMC part number 0313175
The dipstick is part number 0914488
The washer for the dipstick is part number 0303067
Different size washers for the 2 lower drain and fill plugs are part number 311598......they are a slightly smaller diameter than the one on the dipstick.

Fill with 64 ounces of gear oil from the center hole of the drive.

Please don't reply to 2 year old posts asking someone to look at your thread, that is not cool.
