Unable to shift into Reverse

Took boat out this weekend. As we were unloading into water we had difficulty moving shift lever into reverse. I tightened the threads at the shift cable connection and that took the resistance away at the shifter but now it just grinds and smokes in reverse. Any idea what I should look at ?

For anyone to be able to help you here, we need to know at bare minimum what boat you have, what engine and what outdrive.

its a 1986 50 hp outboard mercury outboard on a pontoon
