unburnt oil in midsection

I have an 82 50hp johnson that I have some concern about. I was running it the other day and noticed alot of water (enough to fill a cup every second or two) coming out the upper exhaust holes. I dropped the lower unit to take a look around and noticed alot of dark sludge in the midsection (outside the exhaust tube). It smells like exhaust so I assume it is unburnt oil. Is it normal to have unburnt oil in the midsection? Is the unburnt oil and Water out exhaust holes part of the same problem?

Provided I understand where you're looking, yes, it's typical to have unburn oil in the exhaust. Anyone that runs a 2 stk on a test tank will agree, as it's very noticable. That was the main issue with 2 strokes, all of the unburn oil. EPA stepped in and drove higher emission standards for todays motors. What ratio are you running? Also, upper exhaust holes will throw water, and I've seen some motors throw alot, and some not much at all. It this the first time you've noticed it spitting out as much as you've mentioned?

I included some pictures that show what im talking about. Running 50:1 ratio and the water out the exhaust holes is something that I have not noticed before. Doesnt mean that it hasnt always been like that just that i have not noticed it.

looks normal to me. but i would have a look at the gearcase oil, just to rule out some odd problem there.

Yea,that looks like slung emulsified gear oil to me. I'd inspect the lower unit as nwcove suggests. Likely culprits range from leaky drain/fill washers to failed driveshaft seal, propshaft seals,or shift rod seal.
