I saw on another post a problem I am having but didn't know how to post messaage under that subjest heading. Anyway I have a 97 40hp Evinrude. I have been trying to get it going for the summer but I'm having problem keeping it running. It may start and run a few second maybe a minute but starts losing power and cut off. I have the motor in a 55 gal barrel and noticed a black sticky film of grease or oil on the top of the water. Is this something that may be come serious? I am in the process of changing the plugs, I changed the gear oil in the lower unit and replacing the old gas and gotten the greasy water out of the barrel. Is there anything else I need to do to get to get this motor running? I'm ready to fish.

Re: unburnt oil

A film of oil and unburned fuel will show up after running an engine in a barrel. That is normal.

From your description I think you need to troubleshoot your entire fuel system, from fuel tank to carbs and in between.
