I've had my HDS5 for a few months and am still struggling with trying to find setting that work well for me. 83/200hz wsbl transducer that is selected in settings. I fish coastal BC 2-300ft water (ocean) and am constantly changing from 83hz to 200hz and various pallates and messing with the auto sensitivity feature to manual sensitivity and continue to struggle. All the pallates i use end up "filled" with color (looks like interference) I've tried to bring down the sensitivity but then lose detail. I've seen on the Lowrance website the beautiful screenshots and i have never been able to get anything close to that. I think i am seeing fish arches at times but there is so much color on my screen it's hard to see. Bottom shows up perfectly although at speed i lose it (dealing with that problem....) i'm really frustrated, have read through the manual a few times, and know that the HDS is fine...it's operator error!!!! Help! thanks

???? Hooked up to the house battery along with all other accessories through my fuse panel. an interesting thought though. I think it is with what I'm doing with it vs the HDS...something I'm not adjusting

The HDS work fine in full auto mode. No need to be switching back and forth between 83 and 200 in those depth.

Do a manual reset of the unit and put it in full auto with the boat adrift. What do you see on your screen?

I remember reading about other electronics creating interferance when using the same battery. That's all.

I picked up 1 of those small rechargable batteries from Cabelas for my HB SI and it works great so far.

Re: Understanding HDS woes......

I would agree, sounds like you are getting interference on your screen. It can be from almost anything, espically if you are running it through your fuse box. I would first try hooking it directly to the battery and see if that helps. If not, I would start turning off accessories and see if that changes anything.

Also, transducer placement is why it is not reading while you are at speed. I can get a bottom reading at 70mph in my bass boat. I also have a transducer switch to switch from two seperate transducers on the rear of my boat. One is mounted in the hull for high speed readings and the other is on my jackplate for SI images.

Hope this helps!
