I have twin 5.0 Gi Volvos in my 2000 Cobalt. They are original to the boat and have about 175 hours on them. I just bought the boat this season and am finding that the previous owner didn't maintain the boat very well. When we changed the oil after purchasing the boat, the filters were marked "55 hours, 10/02". My bad on not checking closer, but the boat was supposedly maintained by a marina that I trusted up until 142 hours. They also supposedly winterized it last fall. I saw the invoice, they charged the guy for oil and filters. Guess we both got screwed.
At cold idle both engines run about 40 psi (electronic gauge). After letting them warm up, my first 20 minutes or so at 3200 rpm's (my typical cruise), I am at 60 psi. After that if I take it back to idle they seem to run about 15 psi at 600 rpm's. 800 rpm's will get me about 20 psi. Today I went for a longer cruise and noticed that my starboard engine was running about 50 psi at 3200 and 165 degrees, and my port engine was just over 40 psi. The engine synchro (gauge) had them running dead even, and she ran that way for the hour or so we were out. I should also note that the port engine has a "tick" at cold idle. Consensus seems to be a sticking lifter. Once she is warm it seems to go away for the most part.
Bottom line, do I need to be concerned? I plan to pull the intake this fall if the lifter noise doesn't go away to see what's up. Is it safe to run the boat the rest of the season or will I cause more damage? Thoughts?
