unhooking shift rod on 1989 johnson 110

i am removing lower unit and just wondering what is the best way to go about unhooking the shift rod.It looks very hard to get at . thanks

It's easier if the engine is in reverse gear. A 1/4" drive with a swivel will reach it.

Look at the stbd side of your shift linkage and you will find a circlip on the linkage shaft. Pull that out and push the linkage to port. This should disconnect the upper linkage. You may have to have in fwd to do this.

where the bolt would usually go through the hole in the top of the shift rod on this engine it looks like it has a solid pin in it.doesn't look like head of bolt is broken off has paint on both ends of it.the piece that is attached to the shift rod is mounted on a shaft using a pinch bolt looks impossible to get at if you loosened the pinch bolt and slid that piece off the shaft i wonder if that piece would have enough room to come out with the shift shaft

thanks boobie shaft had a hitch pin in it.Removed pin slid rod off
