Uniden Solara VHF Reviews?

I'm looking at a Uniden Solara VHF fixed mount for my boat. I currently don't have a VHF onboard and was thinking of buying a handheld due to the lower cost. Everything I've read points to a fixed mount VHF as being the best primary use radiao due to the extra power (25 watts vs. 5 watts). I can get a Uniden Solara at a local marine supply place on sale for $119 Canadian.
Does anyone have or use one of these?

Thanks

Re: Uniden Solara VHF Reviews?

iboats has it for 119 usd. i just put a uniden oceanus in mine. no idea how it works. i wanted it for river safety and aint been to the river yet... i did the oceanus + the anntena combo they got here at iboats at the marine store. mostly for the price. added up what i wanted for a radio and antenna and it was over $400. so the combo pack iboats has seemed like a good idea. the radio seems to work is all i can say.
i agree. get a fixed first. i went back and forth between handheld and fixed too. and ya just can't get around the 8' antenna. it's partly the power of 5 watts vs 1 or 25. but it's more about antenna height. and handheld don't get it that way.

as for the oceanus. it programed ok, and i get the weather. it's vol. is loud enough and i can understand what's being said on the weather radio. how it works ship to ship. i don't know yet....seemed like a good enough product to me......for what i'm doing with mine anyways.....

don't know if the soloars has dsc. but if it don't i'd go up a level in radios to get it.... it seems like the new hip thing....

only reason i comment is because its a uniden i got too......good luck with yer decision......

I have Uniden Solaris DSC w/ 8' antenna. Works good. I use it mostly for weather.
