Uniden has always had the reputation of an entry level quality lacking some of the better qualities as far as I remember.Charlie

Peter - if you haven’t done so already, take a moment and think about what DSC is. A key feature is the ability to transmit the coordinates of the distress. That requires input from a GPS system for the coordinate information. And that means your portable VHF needs to be tethered to a GPS, unless the GPS is built into the radio (don’t think so), or unless you manually enter the data.

I agree with Crazy Charlie’s input. Between the two, I suggest you either keep the Simrad you already have or get another Simrad with DSC. Take a look at the Simrad HD52. It gets the lat/lon while docked for charging. I imagine Uniden is similar.

Also, ICOM is the preferred VHS in the US. Simrad is high quality electronics in every way and I wouldn’t hesitate to own one. IMO, either ICOM or Simrad, it’s splitting hairs. ICOM may have a few more features, Simrad may be a little more robust. Standard Horizon makes some very robust handheld units. Don't know if they have any that are DSC enabled. I would not bother with Uniden. Thems me 2 pennies. :)

I too own a Uniden unit. Constructed exceptionally well and works great. Personally, I no longer believe the assertions that Uniden is 'entry-level' equipment. I have seen some units from other manufacturers that would never stand up to my Uniden box.

I have this model (Uniden Voyager) and am very happy with it. Small, rugged, lithium ion battery, multiple channel scan, NOAA weather with SAME alert, AC/DC charging, just to name a few. The base is literally palm sized. For my Midwest inland lake boating, it fits my needs perfectly.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...ent_category=uniden voyager&*******=064127484

Not sure why it is cheaper here?

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...ent_category=uniden voyager&*******=064127484
