not sure if this is the right forum for this post but i didn't see any other forum categories that seemed appropriate, so sorry if this is the wrong place to ask... I cant find any name plate on the tilt trim pump the only identifying info is the number: 45060A1
seems to be a merc. trying to google this leads to some search results that initially seem promising but then turn out to have no actual relevant info.
Anyways, this was a free boat, got the motor running so now im moving on to the tilt/trim. its got a three button switch, the buttom button works to lower it, the top one whines like the pump motor is spinning, but it doesn't actually lift the boat motor. from what i've read it seems likely that this was an issue of low fluid, so ive been filling it, or trying to at least. im not actually sure where i'm supposed to fill from because there seem to be so many possible spots. one of the pictures attached shows where i've been filling from. i'll take the screw out on either side, fill with tilt/trim fluid, close them, manually lift the motor up so it pushes the fluid through the line, lower, unscrew, fill more. so far i've put 4 8 ounce tubes of fluid into the thing and it seems to be almost full but it still wont lift. it works on down, it whines on up, but does not lift it.
anyone able to point me in the right direction for where i could find a manual for this thing? or even get me another name for the thing? its attached to a mercury 850 so im assuming this pump is by mercury too, but going through their online parts catalog searching the number above gets me nothing. any other thoughts on what the issue might be?
i found a wiring diagram on another thread in here and it shows the unconnected purple and blue wire going to some kind of timer switch i dont seem to have. not sure if that could be part of the problem. thanks for any info

Very common pump used on many Mercury products in the 60's / 70's and early 80's-----You add #30 motor oil as per the fill location in post # 2

So I got i figured out how to get the fluid topped off, ran it up and down a couple times just fine, then went to lift it up again and noticed as it got halfway up it started slowing down. Checked for a leak quick and then noticed I tiny stream of smoke coming out where the wires come out the top of the motor.... how bad of news is this...? Did I just run it too much and need to let it cool down or is something seriously wrong now...? ☹️

Ok after carefully disassembling, I think I’ve found the problem.... the stator is full of hydrolic fluid... I’m assuming that’s not supposed to be in there. The smoke coming out I’m assuming was probably some hydrolic fluid burning as the motor was run... Is this something a gasket replacement can fix? The rest of the internals look to be in pretty good shape. Brushes have minimal wear. And anything recommended to get all the oil out from the stator and rotor? Carb cleaner or break cleaner?
Thanks for any advice

There would be a seal / o-ring where the rotor / armature goes into the pump housing.

Remember the armature and field have their windings coated with varnish. All carb and most brake cleaners will dissolve this varnish causing shorts and making the motor unusable.

Just wipe the oil off, and replace the rubber o ring seal.

Wish I would have read this before I took carb cleaner to it...😳 fortunately I got really lucky though and the carb cleaner didn’t harm it. Got the brushes cleaned off too and back in place and motor back together and it seems to be running now. After doing some more digging I think I found my problem. The air bleed was closed tightly down and likely forced fluid up into the stator. With the air bleed opened and fluid replaced, working great now with no more issues. Thanks for the advice guys 👌

Chris1956 was on the caution side & wanted you make you aware of possibilities.

In certain cases (saturated for a prolong time) will cause harm to certain coatings
I have used it many time on the winding (starters/motors) a quick clean never seemed to hurt it.

Force, Carb cleaners are designed to dissolve residue from old fuel. As such they usually have Xylol and acetone as key ingredients. These are also the ingredients used in paint remover and surely will dissolve varnish.

Any carb cleaner that does not have those ingredients is a poor one.

It was the cheap 97 cent can from Walmart so “cheap crappy carb cleaner” Is definitely a possibility here lol
