Granted, the UN does some good things in the realm of human rights. Aside from that (and certainly not to diminish that good thing), can anyone even hint at something positive that the UN has done in the area of international relations/world peace?

For example, when has a UN resolution ever been enforced?

The UN is an organization of enemies of all people that are free. The want the USA to bow down and accept the laws of diactatorships. I believe the UN wants to rule the world with their own controls on freedom.

enforced? The UN isn't a lawmaking body, UN resolutions aren't laws and therefore aren't enforceable.

The UN fought 2 wars as the result of its resolutions. The Korean war and the war to keep Katanga from seceding from the Kongo.
This was in the fifties and early sixties.

And what blazing examples of competent restoration of stability THEY are, huh?
Get us out of the UN yesterday.
And kick them out of New York.

I think you speak of theory. In reality the resolutions are very much enforceable, and/or ignorable, depending on who’s your friend, who has the biggest guns, etc. Reference Israel; it’s in no one’s interest (even down right stupid) to enforce the UN resolutions as they apply to Israel so no one does. That’s part of what has the Arab world’s panties in a wad. In the end the UN is a joke.

A resolution which is "enforceable, and/or ignorable" is unenforceable. The UN doesn't have a "resolution enforcement" mechanism. Whomever has the firepower and the balls enforces whatever rules they want, UN resolution not necessary.

The UN is a tool. Not the sharpest one in the shed, but a tool nevertheless.

Re: United Nations

The UN is not designed to be the enforcement arm of US foreign policy. They do have their place.

Anyone heard Newt Gingrich's theory on the UN? Awhile back I heard him, and he suggested when there was lots at stake on some issues, simply bypass the UN and take some issues directly to the G-8--come up with agreements that all major economic powers can get behind, and implement those.
While we may well not get precisely everything we want, we will present a unified front with enormous economic clout. It may not work in every case, but it's worth a try.

In the case of Iran, or other mideast countries, it may be tough to get them to take sanctions seriously because they are awash in oil money, no matter who issues those sanctions.

Countries change because they have to--not because they want to or are told to. Cut off their oil money, and they will change in a hurry. The key is to figure out how to cut off their oil money.
