Hi there, Universal diesel problems. I guess I'll just start from the beginning...this is the M3-20, 18 horse, 3 cylinder. Never had a problem, has 2000 hours on it. I ran over a huge fishing net, not around the prop but dragging on the rudder for 2-3 minutes...overheated engine. I put water in reservoir, overheated next day. Checked raw water strainer, it's fine. Pulled impeller, it's fine, water pump is new, check oil..it's fine, not milky head gasket seems ok, pulled thermostat, boiled it, it's fine, put new one in anyway. Next day, ran 24 hours at 2500 rpm, works fine, rev down to 1300 while anchoring...overheats. Pull thermostat all together, pull heat exchanger to look for crap, pull all hoses to look for crap, pull hoses off hot water heater and bypass it in case it's clogged, dove on thru-hull to look for crap, no problems evident anywhere. Checked fresh water pump for play, discolor, noises, pulled it off, looks like new.

Totally unfamilar with engine/setup, but I'll give it a shot.

How hot did it get the first time? Could you have messed something up on the first overheat?

Sounds like slow RPMs are where it is overheating. Must be something related to pump speed.

Ken

Re: Universal diesel overheating

The fact is that I have checked everyting I dont know what to look for next. I really need someone who DOES know the engine. This is the M3-20 universal diesel, 18 horse, 3 cylinder. My brain is numb   with frustration. Any one please, I am on my way to Puerto rico under sail. Paul.

Paul,

I agree with "kenimpzoom". Low water flow, through the block, could cause this. Just because the circulating pump is new doesn't mean it is working. I believe an ispection of that pump would be in order.

Also, an overfueling diesel will overheat. Are you getting a lot of smoke at your lower rpm's?

Just because your impeller looks fine doesnt mean it is. It could have been ran dry when it was caught up in the net and burnt up. I would replace it for piece of mind.

Your overheating showed up on a guage or horn? Change sensor if horn.
