Universal Tilt Gauge?

I got a merc 150 blackmax, and the rod that the trim sender fits into is broke. Rather than trying to disassemble the mount, is there a universal gauge/sender out there? I'm thinking maybe something that would sit between the transom and motor that would measure the angle.

Any thoughts?

That rod is part of the power tilt system, I don't understand how it could be broke. Is it the sender that's broken?

I found a universal trim and lift sender and gauge at Panther Marine. You'd have to look at it, but the one I got appears to be very versatile, and top quality.

Panther marine accessories

Something is wrong with the rod. It doesn't turn in relation to the motor. So the slot is always in the same orientation. The sender never sends a different signal.

Looks like it would be a real pain to get in there and replace it.

D.-
You have one of the panther units? Where does it mount? How big is the sender?

Thanks.

I've got one, but I have it set up to my Quicksilver Paralift hydraulic lift (scissors type). The sender has a circular part about 1.5 inches in diameter and then a rotating arm about two inches long. The arm has a 90 degree bend at the last 1/2 inch or so, but you could bend it in other configurations if needed. Various other adjustments can be made in the throw of the arm as well as the position of the circular "core".

You can contact the folks at Panther via their web site. I found them to be quite helpful when I was trying to rig up a gauge for this lift of mine - there is no factory sender for it, and this one was pretty easy to adapt and works well.

So what's involved in replacing the pin so I can use the stock sender? Does the motor have to come off?

Re: Universal Tilt Gauge?

There should be a cross pin which secures the piston retaining pin (the shaft with the slot that engages the trim sender) to the piston end causing it to lock to the piston and turn relative to the motor bracket. It sounds like the cross pin is missing or sheared-off and the retaining pin is moving with the motor bracket.

So maybe just a new cross pin and no dis-assembly?

Re: Universal Tilt Gauge?

Run the motor all the way up and look for hole thru the end of lift cyl. shaft.
