To start I think WE solved my overheating problem. I pulled out my veranthernam and ran the engine on the the river. My overheat horn never came on and I ran the engine for about a half an hour. When it was done I put my hands on the heads and they were pretty hot but not hot enough that I couldn't keep my hands on there for a good 10 seconds. So it's safe to assume that my veranthernam is no good right?

secondly, The other night I was running the engine and noticed that the idle mixture screw housingings were worn and the screws were vibrating and turning when the engine was running. So is it safe to do a cheap fix and put a thin plumbing tape around the screws and put them back in because that will create enough tightness to keep them from turning.

Thirdly, I also noticed that my #2 plug wire had been rubbing under the flywheel and it wore through the wire enough that I could see spark jumping from the wire to the flywheel, as well when I quickly touched the plug head attached to the spark plug I would get a quick shock. Could this along with the screws spinning on my carbs be the cause for my engine to keep running rough. I rebuilt the carbs about a month and a half ago.

sorry for life story. thanks guys.

The jumping spark is a very good cause of rough running. Replace the wire. You touch the wires? Not me, boy. I HATE getting zapped!! Some of the newer motors will knock you right out of your socks.

Are we talking about your 1972 125hp? I don't quite understand the question about idle mixture screws. There are none. There are screw plugs with gasket washers behind them and they should be turned all the way in tight. The idle mixture is controlled by fixed jets.

Jumping spark is not a good thing and a likely cause of rough running.

on the cover that bolts over the carbs it has four holes big enough for a screw driver and it says slow speed idle mixture. There are two on the top carb and two on the bottom. If these screws are loose like they are could that also contribute to a rough running engine? Sucking in more air than it needs?

My seloc manual says I have a type IVB carberator which does not have any idle screws, but there is also a type IVA with a low speed needle. Mine does not have a low speed needle but it has screws of some kind. I pulled them out and they're just screws with an "O" ring washer. I don't get it, if they're not supposed to be there, then what are they?

They are plugs for the holes where needles would be if you had any. You have fixed jets so needles are not used nor needed. It's just their way of using the same casting for more than one type of carburetor.

You are correct, if they are loose, it will suck air in through there.

ok so I cleaned out the holes and put lock tite in them. I tightened down the screws all the way and fired up the motor. I don't get it because it ran like a bag of junk. It kicked and sputtered and blew clouds of blue smoke reaking like gasoline that covered my neighbourhood....he..he..As well there was what looked to be gasoline leaking out of the upper exhaust housing under the top side on the outside where the cowel snaps on. Not a little, but a segnificant amount. ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS, BEER CAN ONLY KNUMB SO MUCH EMOTIONAL PAIN!!!
lol. thanks.
