This is a motor I picked up with hoard of parts I bought on ebay. I have no idea of it's model. I'm assuming late forties early fifties Johnson.

It's unfortunately locked up. It doesn't look like it overheated. Sat up too long. I'll put some penetrating oil in the plug holes and see if it free's up.

EDIT I have to do a bit of house cleaning, EDIT I'll hold on to the head and carb. and probably some other parts, because you never know. In it's current state it just takes up too much room.

Bottom spark plug hole needs a helicoil or an insert.

Thanks all, EDIT

Paul

Thats an old Johnson QD 1949 - 1952. The 53 and later had the side shifter. I see that one has the front shifter. Judging by the looks of it, it would be a miracle if you could get it free and spin over.

It's soaking, I hate throwing stuff like that away. If it was from the 60's and up it would already been broken down for scrap. Too much stuff and not enough storage.

What you have is just old (and in very poor condition), but just because it's old doesn't make it worth much, even if it were pristine. I'd scrap it, but, hey, it's your motor.

wilde1j, I'm not trying to sell anything, if someone could use a carb, or a rubber cowling mount fine. Knob from the carb. etc...

Sorry I even posted it.

That was nice to offer. someone might need something. I had a 50's E15 that I removed the power head and soaked the whole thing in a bucket of kerosene for a few days to free up a stuck piston and it worked... I like the method as you're sure the kerosene gets pretty much everywhere...

Oh, and I concur. It looks like an early QD.

It's only about money with some people. Keep trying, someone will know what it is and want a part of it ... :)

Well, here is a way to narrow it down. if you see the later universal type ignition system in it, then it's a 51 - 52. If it has the earlier style coils with the gillatine style points, then it's a 49 - 50. It's definately not a 53, because 53 had the rotogrip throttle. I believe that year also had the side shifter, versus the front shiftter, but I could be one year off. I know 53 was the last year of the "fins forward" shroud.

But yes, that is for sure an early QD. The front shifter with the black knob is a proof positive give away.:D

The welch plug on the powerhead may still be there and have the numbers on it.

Amoci looks like the place for this kind of thing. Thanks for the positive responses. Alreadly have someone who could use the flywheel and port cowling bracket. Fantastic.

I have a Johnson model 300 and a Johnson model TD, that are in the same boat as this one.

There is a dwindling supply of parts for these motors. The dump seemed like an unfitting end.

Thanks all, moving this show over to the amoci board.

Thank you zephyr,

51'-52' it has universal type ignition.

here's the other two, posting on amoci, in a few.

both feel like they have pretty decent compression.

'53 still had the front shifter but with a twist throttle. And it cost all of $275. I can get more than that for a running one now!

Re: Unknown motor w/pics-free parts

I love my QD. It's a 22, so it's a bit later and just past the "cool" cutoff compared the looks of those great, late '50's models, but the guts are basically the same as the one you've got here. Some how they seem stronger than the 10 hp label would suggest. Cheap and easy to work on too.
I just saw a brand new 4 hp Merc the other day for $1400!!!! Are you F'n kidding me?
Let's see, a unique, bulletproof, cool looking, vintage Jonny vs. Ugly, new Merc that looks like everyone else's, has less than half the power, and costs about 6 or 7 times as much.
I know which one I'm choosing.

Oh, okay. I thought they had the side shifter in that year, but I wasn't sure. I had a 53 model once, but only long enough to get it running and sell it, but I do remember the roto-grip throttle.

My fav of the 10's is the 1956 - 57 Evinrude Sportwin. It still has the beefier lower unit, used on the 18's and the cool late 50's look:D

Re: Unknown motor w/pics-free parts

Ditto. I think everything made in 1957 must've looked cool; Chevys, outboards, boats, everything. They made quite a dramatic change when they went from the cool, old, 50's style cowls to the "new", kinda boring, fierglass ones, but it's the guts that count, and I'm glad I've got one.
